You can use borders in your room to co-ordinate with your paper and provide a break in the pattern, or to complement the design. A border can add personality to a room, whilst maintaining continuity to the walls. It is usually sold in five or ten metre lengths and should be put up as a complete piece on each wall. The joins should only be in the corners of the room.

Be Decorative

There are numerous different ways to use a border. You can run one at ceiling height, or at both ceiling and skirting board height. Use them around architectural features such as doors and windows. You can even experiment with different types of borders - they come in all sorts of shapes, colours and patterns.

Be Daring

You can also use a border to mark the change of different wallpapers. Create a split wall with a border at chair rail height and a darker paper above and a lighter one below. On the same theme you can place a border at a higher level, running wallpaper horizontally one full width down and then use a lighter paper below the border. Put a square of complementary wallpaper in the middle of a wall and use a border to create a 'frame'. This works well to add interest to a plainer wallpaper.
