It feels great to make your home your own by decorating it to your taste. And it's even better to stand back and know that you did it yourself. The thought of re-decorating your house may seem a little daunting at first, but we can help you plan carefully and approach each project one by one. With Guthrie Bowron you'll find it's easier than you think!

Look at each room and ask:

  • Why does it look so good?
  • How do the colours all work together?
  • Is there rough texture contrasting with smooth shiny surfaces?
  • Does the room feel formal or welcoming?
  • Does each room belong to the other with unifying elements?
  • Is there a seamless transition in flooring?
  • And does the house have unity, flow and a feeling of space?

Texture is very important and most often overlooked! Shiny, glossy products add formality to a room as do cut pile carpets, marble and mirrors. If you want to make a place more welcoming rough it up with texture – add wood, baskets, plants and sisal or textured carpet. If something is missing in a room it is most often texture.

Avoid having all the furniture matching and let rooms evolve. It is fine to have different woods and pieces of furniture as the flooring and background colours will tie it all together. This helps to create individual style.

Neutral is NOT magnolia coloured paint, cream carpet, sofas & curtains! Neutrals are any colours that look chalky, muddy and washed out. Neutral colours go with each other as they have these properties in common and this makes them easy to work with. Neutral colours are always best because they are easy on the eye, subtle, buck fashion trends, make a good background and do not dominate a scheme. Brighter accents are added last. Basically the brighter the colour the less you want to use it. Always limit the number of products/materials used; too many is confusing and unity, flow and space just won’t happen!
