Selecting Flooring
So you’re thinking about updating the flooring in your home. This is an important decision, and there are a number of things to keep in mind when making your selection.
Never choose flooring in isolation. It should be subtle and neutral, and part of a colour scheme, never dominating.
Strive to have a ‘cohesive whole’ or harmonious home by making each room belong to the other by using common elements. This creates flow and unity and therefore a feeling of space. As flooring is one of the largest surface areas in a home it is the perfect product to unify a scheme, and create a harmonious whole. Tie it all together with flooring!
Try to create a ‘seamless transition’ in flooring – tie in hard with soft flooring by looking at the colours in each and tying them in closely. This makes movement from room to room less obvious in a house and makes each area belong to the other creating flow, unity and space. Try to use a maximum of three types of flooring in a home e.g. if you use wood in the entrance, then match in a vinyl strip in the other areas.
